These data recorders are electronic instruments that look, in size and shape, very similar to a USB stick or highlighter pen. When used correctly, they can be set to automatically record the relative humidity and temperature inside a property at pre-set intervals. Data logging is typically undertaken for around four weeks. Upon completion, the recorded information is downloaded to a computer and viewed in a variety of charts. This allows the relationship between relative humidity and temperature to be analysed by a skilled surveyor and the precise cause of condensation determined.

Condensation data recording is an extremely useful tool for surveyors to have on hand as it allows a fuller picture which helps us to accurately diagnose the condensation problem. The best thing about this particular tool is because it collects data over a period of weeks, we can see patterns emerging which can help to explain why the condensation is occurring. Once we know why the problem has occurred, we are able to make a start on the solution.
